New to grant management?
Grant management is the oversight of the full grant lifecycle, spanning from the initial application through post-award stages. With grant funds supporting critical work by individuals and organizations, grant management is the behind-the-scenes work that drives social progress. The work is often executed by grant or program managers.
A grant manager is the professional directly responsible for administering and managing a grant. They also often have a hand in planning and executing an organization’s grantmaking strategy.
A grant manager oversees aspects of the full grant lifecycle. Depending on the sector and role, a grant manager’s work can include grant writing, application development, relationship building, strategic planning, grant administration, compliance, monitoring and evaluation, closeouts, and audits.
Across sectors, many teams use grant management software to manage grants. The software is designed to give administrators and applicants a seamless experience through the full grant lifecycle. Key features include an accessible design, an easy-to-build application, in-app communication, impact reporting, and funds tracking.
To become a grant manager, aim to develop skills and experience in business, communication, budgeting, project management, or nonprofit management. Also, consider joining a grantmaking community such as PEAK Grantmaking, the Technology Association of Grantmakers, or NGMA to find opportunities, build your network, and learn more about specific roles.
